Villa Penrose
2019Since its discovery in the 1930s, the Penrose Triangle has fascinated and infuriated designers. Like the Impossible Trident and other ambiguous images, the Penrose Triangle is an optical sleight-of-hand, fixed in two dimensions but indeterminate in three. The client for Villa Penrose is a world-class marathon runner and triathlete. Rather than wedging a fitness-intensive program into a traditional home partí, we imagined the residence as a spatial field of physical challenges and energy capture. All surfaces in the VP are tailored for movement, machined for perpetual motion. Villa Penrose reflects and harnesses the clients’ enthusiasms, as well as the elements, rather than simply defying them.
