Ruspoli Studio
2018Cinematic interests drove both the residential projects and the competitions. Two of the latter, the “Mind the Gap” completion for Chicago and the London Cinema Challenge, took up that program explicitly, but most of the houses and entries have filmic issues in their DNA in some way, and all the additions and competitions reprised my interest in vision. The relative remove, not to say sitelessness, of competitions forced us to develop visual systems and sightlines intrinsic to the development of the architectural object. By contrast, the additions are often exercises in lensing — the framing of particular views from reciprocal interiors. If competitions are a bit like setting up an alternative method of perspective, additions are objects seen both in isolation and as instruments for capturing views themselves. Prospecting is thus a double-edged term: These last projects are both current prospects and means of looking-forward — perspectives on, and projections into, the future.
